About APS

According to the United States Energy Information Administration’s most recent data, Arizona has a number of interesting facts concerning its energy production:

First, the largest nuclear power plant, the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Stations is one of the largest net generators of electricity, and the 2nd-largest power plant by capacity of any kind in the United States. As of 2016, 2/5 of Arizona’s renewable electricity generation came exclusively from solar energy. The state ranked 2nd in the nation in utility-scale electricity generation from solar energy and 3rd in generation from distributed solar resources (customer-sited, small-scale). Because of Arizona’s relatively small industrial sector, the state ranked 44th in the nation per capita energy consumption in 2015—despite being the  14th most populous state. And the state’s only operating coal mine, Kayenta (located on the Navajo and Hopi reservations), is scheduled to close in 2019, removing nearly 40% of Arizona’s coal-fired capacity from service. Last, natural gas provided the largest share of Arizona’s net electricity generation in 2016, which surpassed coal’s annual contribution for the 1st time in the state’s history.
