About TEP

According to the United States Energy Information Administration’s most recent data, the state of Arizona has a number of exciting facts about its energy production:

  • The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is the largest nuclear power plant in Arizona and one of the largest net generators of electricity in the state. It is also the 2nd-largest power plant by capacity of any kind in the U.S..
  • 2/5ths of Arizona’s renewable electricity generation came exclusively from solar energy in 2016.
  • The state ranked 2nd in the U.S. in utility-scale electricity generation from solar energy, while ranking 3rd in generation from distributed solar resources (customer-sited, small-scale).
  • Because of the state’s small industrial sector, Arizona ranked 44th in the nation per capita energy consumption (as of 2015).
  • Arizona’s only operational coal mine, Kayenta (which is located on the Navajo and Hopi reservations), is scheduled to close in 2019. This will remove almost 40% of Arizona’s coal-fired capacity from service.
  • Last, natural gas provided the largest share of Arizona’s net electricity generation in 2016 (see below), which surpassed coal’s annual contribution for the first time in the state’s history.
