About Rocky Mountain Power

Here are some quick facts about Wyoming’s energy sources and production:

As the smallest state by population with only 579,000 residents, Wyoming’s total electricity demand is low and output is high, which allows the state to send nearly 60% of its generated electricity to other states.

Wyoming has a vast amount of natural resources, which it supplies other states with, including:

As of 2016, Wyoming produced around 40% of all coal mined in the U.S. in 2016, which accounts for 1/3 of U.S. coal reserves.

Similarly, Wyoming is one of the top 10 natural gas-producing states, with 2/3 of that production occurring on federal lands.

To fuel nuclear power plants nationwide, Wyoming has nearly 60% of the U.S. operating capacity for producing uranium ore, as the largest uranium mining operations in the United States are in based in the state.

For the last decade, Wyoming has embraced wind power, which accounts for almost 10% of the state’s net electricity generation.
